Detecting and Curing Thrush
Thrush is a form of yeast infection which occurs in the mouth and on the tongue. It appears as white patches and gives a semblance of milk stuck on the mouth. It normally affects babies and older adults who have a weak immune system that cannot control the growth of the yeast. The first time you see white patches stuck to the roof of the mouth or the tongue, you might mistake it for milk and attempt to rub it off. Be careful because you could make it red and sore. Babies with thrush might not feel like eating.
Thrush can appear among babies four to six weeks after birth although it can also appear in other people at varying ages. The main contention would be whether the individual has a sufficient immune system to combat the rash. Thrush is not serious and can go untreated. It doesn’t cause much irritation. However it is unsightly and could confuse the diagnosis of any other sickness. If the baby is uncomfortable, treat it with an antifungal medication similar to treatments for diaper rash. However, for older persons, there may be other reasons for exhibiting thrush, such as type of medications or health problems. It is better to consult a physician to validate the diagnosis and be sure appropriate treatments are prescribed.
There is no way of preventing the occurrence of thrush. It can be easily cured in babies through an antifungal medicine applied directly on the white patches. Check the baby thoroughly since it is possible that diaper rashes could also develop at the same time. If a diaper rash appears, apply an appropriate antifungal treatment also. For adults, an antifungal pill, lozenges or liquid applied on the white patches may be prescribed.
Apply proper hygiene treatments on the bottle nipples and pacifiers. If the mother is breast feeding, it may be advisable to apply medication on the nipples and refrain from a few days from breast feeding since the infection can pass back and forth from the baby to the mother. For adults who use dentures, make sure the dentures are properly cleaned every night. Try soaking the dentures and rinsing them well afterwards. Whatever attempts you make to clear your mouth of thrush will not be effective if your dentures keep passing the infection back to you.
Keep close watch over your baby. They cannot tell you what is wrong with them. The best they can do is cry and hope you will be able to decipher their pains and sores. Thrush is not a serious ailment. It will disappear with the right medication. Give your baby love and attention and check them over carefully for rashes. Rashes and thrush are normal ailments with babies and can be handled easily during the early stages. Don’t leave rashes unattended as it can become severe and cause discomfort to the baby.
