Cleaning a tent isn’t really difficult, but it does take some planning and elbow grease. Use these tips the next time your tent needs sprucing up.
First tip: Don’t use your washing machine. A washing machine can do some serious damage to a tent and it’s seams. The twisting action of a typical machine will most likely pull the seams apart.
Second tip: Don’t use laundry detergent. Laundry soap is just too harsh and will remove the waterproofing that your tent has. Often just using clean water is enough. But if soap is needed to remove some stubborn dirt, then use a mild soap designed for tents and outdoor gear that is waterproofed.
Third tip: Fully set your tent up. Preferably on a sunny day, but in the shade if possible. By having the tent set up, you can better clean it and by doing your cleaning on a sunny day your tent will dry better.
Fourth tip: Use a sponge or hand towel to wash the tent. A soft bristle scrub brush can be used to remove tougher dirt and grime.
Fifth tip: Rinse your tent thoroughly. Use plenty of water to make sure that all the soap is gone from the surface of the tent. Any left over soap will just attract more dirt which defeats the whole purpose.
Sixth tip: Let it dry completely. Packing away a tent that is a little damp will only result in a tent that ends up smelling like those dirty socks again!
